Astilbe 'Sprite' || PERENNIAL PLANT OF THE YEAR 1994

Astilbe simplicifolia 'Sprite'. Unusual foliage that is glossy and mid-green with leaves which are lobed, not divided. Plants form compact mounds that look good even without flowers. Open, airy panicles of star-like flowers are followed by ornamental seed heads which provide a few additional months of interest.

MATURE HEIGHT: 15".

MATURE SPREAD: 12".

HARDINESS ZONES: 4,5,6,7,8,9.

FLOWER: Mid to late season.

SUN EXPOSURE: Full sun to mostly shady.

SIZE SHIPPED: 2.5" pot. A well rooted plant of blooming age. 

SHIPPED LIVE & POTTED: May thru mid-September. SHIPPED DORMANT & POTTED: mid-September thru March (sleeping, no foliage). SHIPPED POTTED & EMERGING: April. 

Our plant photos are a representation of mature specimens. The plants we sell are not fully grown but they are well established and happily on their way to becoming all they can be.

Astilbe are wonderful hardy perennials that can grow in full sun, part sun or shade. They flourish best in a partly sunny, moist area. As with most perennials Astilbe grow best in well-draining soil. They are a good choice for containers. The fragrant flowers can be dried or added to fresh flower bouquets. The foliage is very attractive even without blossoms. Astilbe are generally resistant to deer and rabbits. Also known as False Spirea they attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Plants may go dormant if they are allowed to dry out. If this happens they usually re-emerge a few weeks later, but sometimes they wait until the following spring.

Our plants have been over-wintered here in the upper Midwest to ensure strength and hardiness and to encourage blooming the first year in your garden. Our plants are grown outdoors where Mother Nature helps us produce the best plants possible. Our potted plants can be planted at your convenience, just keep them outdoors and watered until you are ready to put them into the ground. We include complete planting instructions with all orders.
